While having a full-time job is rewarding (at least on the basis of job security), finding the right side hustle and ultimately becoming fully self-employed makes more sense and offers long lasting benefits. Obviously, venturing into entrepreneurship is a riskier path, but when the rewards of being your own boss start flowing, the sacrifice will have been justified.

Luckily, there are many ways to make money online and if you play your cards right, you’ll easily build a strong business and even work online full time.

Certainly, more and more Kenyans are reaping the rewards that come with working online and considering the fact that the government is  well aware  of the earning potential of freelance full-time jobs, I bet in 2030 we’ll be a country of freelancers comfortably earning from home.

Here is a screenshot of a recent article detailing plans by the ICT ministry to train youths in Kenya for Online jobs. You can read the full article here.

This article is an introductory piece on “Making Money online“. More specifically, you’ll learn 3 simple ways to start making real money online.
  • Freelance Writing
  • Online Marketing
  • Graphic Design

  • Freelance Writing (Academic Writing/ Article writing and Blogging)
To get started with this one, all you need is a computer (a simple desktop will do) and Internet connection, and really the sky is the limit.

I know you are saying, “but Mambo, blogging is not a career, definitely, it aint a way to make money!” “Maybe a tool for driving change in the world, more of a hobby or a diversion.” Well, the truth is this; People are earning  six figures from blogging. Checkout the screenshot below showing Pat Flynn’s Smart Passive income (SPI) blog that earns an average of $ 1, 500, 000 / year.

I’ll quote Pat Flynn:

It’ll take hard work. And it won’t happen overnight. So, don’t look at my income numbers and think, “I could never do that.” That’s not the point of my income reports. The point is to share that amazing success and growth is possible, if—and only if—you put in the time and effort to to build it using strategies and tactics that actually work.

My advice to anyone who feels they can write great content is to start with academic writing because the returns are higher (Not Six figure !). I know from experience that one can easily make an average of $500 working part time. Full-time writers easily earn upto $2500/month

To get an idea of the potential in academic writing, check out the screenshot below for my earnings for January and May 2017 (most academic writing sites pay twice a month)

It’s not just academic writers who earn good money online.  Others are earning money, writing articles, website content, even eBooks;the various opportunities from which you can earn online are limitless.

Learning new things and packaging your knowledge and skills into blogs and eBooks is value added to those seeking to build an online carer. So, remember to target the right audience.

Online Marketing.
If you have the time to work full time, then digital marketing is the way to go!

Just like in any other business, there is no one proven strategy to build a successful digital marketing business from scratch. Fortunately, there are numerous guides to help you build a profitable online marketing agency.

From Youtube videos to blogsand eBooks, you really have no excuse not to learn.

Also, Here is a guide of what we do at CDM !

CDM’s Plan of Action for Online Growth.
  • Finding an audience that we can influence.
  • Letting our network know that we have the right solutions for their needs.
  • Setting up streamlined systems to get work done and for client acquisition.
  • Get more referrals (both offline and online) to expand our reach.
P.S : This guide is not perfect but is meant to be actionable in the sense that it gives us a to do list.

Just to elucidate more on the potential in digital marketing; According to a survey by Adobe, 76 % of business owners believe that marketing has transformed more in the past 2 years than in the last 50. I am also in the process of creating a comprehensive guide that starts from scratch, so for those already-intelligent professionals whose main issue is time, don’t worry I’ll equip you with the right balance of tactical and strategic advice.

That said, it’s worth mentioning that the two pillars of online marketing are online marketing (pun intended) and offline marketing.

I’ll discuss online marketing in detail in my comprehensive guide, but for the sake of beginners, here is a list of the different areas of online marketing.

The influx of free marketing resources and cloud based tools means that it is extremely easy to create and distribute content, but it is also a chance for freelancers to build businesses that generate passive income for years to come.

In other words, even average people like you and me can make an impact with online marketing.

Graphic Design.
I wouldn’t say this article is a tremendous boost to people looking to fully venture into the graphic design industry.

But I know guys who will give you a comprehensive look at how they got started in the freelancing business and give you some excellent insight that can be used again and again.

What is graphic design Anyway? Here is the definition I got from the Professional Association for design
Graphic design, also known as communication design, is the art and practice of planning and projecting ideas and experiences with visual and textual content. The form of the communication can be physical or virtual, and may include images, words, or graphic forms

In other words, the job of the graphic designer is to communicate a specific message to a target audience using visual cues.

I have no background in graphic design so I can’t give you a roadmap to success, but the experience I have designing websites has taught me that freelance graphic design depends on two important things;

  • First off, you need some background skills, so that you do not apply for jobs on Upwork with a portfolio made up of a few Photoshop pieces.
Your mum might consider your work a masterpiece, but this does not mean you are ready to work with paying clients. Take the time to learn and do as much practice as possible.

And with time you will be a master! Then you can confidently look for clients here or here

  • Second, you need clear goals,
Simply because most likely your idea is not original and you need to work hard to stand out. Goals are the life-force that pull you towards success and it is important to learn how to step SMART ones.

More importantly, you must be persistent even when results are not immediate, for the future is bright.

It goes without saying that online business opportunities have varying earning potential.  But the one thing they share in common is freedom to work from anywhere at any time.

Definitely a  good majority of us want that !

A piece of advice here is to never make money the object. Instead try to learn as much as possible and of course, think of creative and original ways of rendering more services.

I will cover three more lucrative online business in the second part, so lookout for that!

Meanwhile Ponder this !

Your mind is plot of ground that reacts to your actions. What we do with it determines our success.”

And remember, if your services are appreciated because they solve real problems, it is only a matter of time before you find ways to monetize them.
